Notes on Lighting
Lighting is extremely important when creating any type of media. It is extremely effective in the horror genre however because it can creates a variety of atmospheres and is often used to build tension. A character or figure that is seen as a silhouette in the distance is more ominous that one far away in the light as it highlights the uncertainty. Dark/low level lighting is used often for the horror genre, this is because darkness is often associated with evil and makes people feel vulnerable/threatened.
When filming the shots inside I will be using the room lighting, which has warm tones, however a lot of them have shadows and tend to be dark which is perfect for my OTS as I want the mood to be mysterious and sinister. I though it will be interesting to use dark lighting inside as a metaphor for the internal struggle and 'darkness' hidden in minds when being manipulated and on the edge of suicide which Ty's character represents.
However using natural soft light outside allows for the overexposure of the acts and mystery. All the actors are in contrast wearing black clothing focusing audience on it and symbolizing the constant evil, being a piece of them too. I also colour corrected many shots to make sure the colours aren't as saturated so it can fit with the atmosphere of the film.
The time of the day when filming is important to consider when creating media in the horror genre, during day time it is considered to be safe as their is light and people around however during the night it is seen to be unsafe/dangerous because of the lack of light and darkness that is given connotations of fear, isolation and the unknown.
The shots in my OTS that are seen from Ty's and Kyle's perspective are darker, adding to the mystery, whereas day time shots with lots of exposing light will be used for the contrasting shots that show the reality of the outside world, not just the cultic and creepy atmosphere.
