Who is renting films?
Netflix
Netflix is an American website that allows to watch a variety of movies and TV shows by paying a monthly subscription. The 'pay once, watch whatever' model alongside the streaming capabilities has made Netflix the most popular platform to watch films these days. As an 'streaming service' you can watch the films while it's still loading online on any device, anytime you want - this made Netflix popular among the audience.
There are a large variety of movies/shows to watch, over 5000+ available, it is easy to see what's already there and what's missing within each of Netflix's many genres - including Horror and its various sub-genres.
In order to see why it would be appropriate to create our desired psychological horror sequence, it is important to analyse what the current market's demand is.

Examples of the most popular films on Netflix now
The Hush
That film has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (a reviewing website) and is based on a deaf woman living in an isolated cottage in the woods. The killer murders her friend and then traps her inside of the house, while she's trying to get help and run away from him. It's a new and less popular film, however those who watched it gave it a high rating because of the anticipation its keeping. |
Scream 2
Although this film is relatively old, the first was so successful (still continues to be the highest grossing slasher flick in the world) that the second one wasn't a disappointment either (81% on Rotten Tomatoes). It is sort of a comedy horror however it's still a classic keeping a tension up and doesn't stop it being one of the best sellers. |
The Conspiracy
That psychological horror tells the story of two documentary filmmakers who originally wanted to create a film about a certain conspiracy theorist. During the film a person disappears and the two filmmakers are left drowned in a world too confusing for their own minds. The film uses a technique known as 'the ambiguous ending' which aims to give the audience a continuity of the film in their own minds meaning an unsettling, interpretive ending haunting long after you watch it. |
These films being currently popular on Netflix show a lack of psychological horror I'm looking for in the industry. The idea of fanaticism and realistic fear isn't as well represented, therefore I aim to create one that will be successful and fill in the needs of the audience.
