Location choices and pictures
DARK ROOMS
My OTS required many dark and ominous locations to make the symbolic shots more menacing. To do this we used locations such as an old house of a friend because the walls, floors and ceilings were were dark and gloomy which added to the eerie look and feel of it all. This provided a good setting to show the audience the symbolism and how it provided the sense of danger which can happen even at home, which is seen as a safe space. Dark rooms also consolidate the eerie atmosphere especially for the theme of rituals and the mind itself - dark and blinded by the scary ideas. Furthermore, dark rooms can also hide a lot which means there is more than you can see hiding in the darkness.

AMSTERDAM AND THE RIVER
Interestingly I happened to be in Amsterdam during the production, so I used the opportunity and filmed some scenes in there. Most importantly I found that some of the alleyways there and the buildings are very quiet and creepy, perfect for the atmosphere I wanted to show in the OTS. Being called a 'TRIP' I wanted to hint at the travel to Dam which could possibly have a traumatic effect on the characters if they got involved with some shadow organizations and haunted by own demons.
I discovered that a perfect metaphor for the flow of mind and its chaotic nature is the water and the canals in Amsterdam. I feel like that went very effectively especially when getting the characters to look at the water and relax around it, suggesting the danger and mystery is near them which doesn't look like it. The reflection of the trees in the water added a distorted and abstract feel to the shot, keeping the audience interested in the 'other side' and alternative truths to well known things.
